Located near the centre of North Island, Rotorua is one of New Zealand's main tourist cities. There are 16 lakes in Rotorua, all formed from craters of extinct volcanoes. It is well-known for its geysers, mud pools and geothermal springs. It is also the heartland of New Zealand Maori culture, and of the 70 thousand, around 30% of the Rotorua district's population have Maori ancestry. Visitors can experience the Maori culture, fish for trout or relax in a hot spring.
